An Interview With Keely Hall, Franklin, Tennessee Market President
What’s your story? Where did you grow up and have you always lived in Tennessee?
I was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas. I went off to college in Southern California, met my wife there, and we stayed in that area for a few years after graduation until we eventually decided it was time to find a place that we’d feel more comfortable raising a family. My wife and I are both hyper-researchers when it comes to making major decisions, so we expected to spend a couple of years researching to find the very best place in the world for us to raise our family. It actually only took us a few months to reach the conclusion that Williamson County, Tennessee was where we wanted to put down roots. We made the move from the west coast in August of 2000 and we knew right away that we’d found home!
How is the culture different at FirstBank compared to larger banks?
At the previous large banks I’ve worked for, if something didn’t fit into a pre-defined box, it just couldn’t be done. There was little room for common sense banking or local decision-making. But for the past ten years, I’ve had the great fortune of working under the FirstBank model. Here, I’m able to dig a little deeper, work a little harder, and find solutions that make sense for everyone – bank, client, and community.
What is your favorite part about your job?
Seeing people reach their dreams – whether that’s a result of helping clients build their dream home or grow their business, or helping bankers accomplish their next career goal.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was in middle school I was absolutely certain I would be the Governor of Texas by the time I was 40. I’m now 46 and have never held a political office. …and I am 100% ok with that! 😊
FirstBank operates as a community bank, with the services and resources of a large bank. What advantages does this give to your customers?
To borrow a phrase from one of my clients. I feel like FirstBank is right in the “sweet spot of banking.” I’m able to offer my clients products and services that many of the smaller banks just can’t afford to offer, but with the personal service and local decision-making that the larger banks simply can’t deliver.
Describe your market area in three words.
Family. History. Vitality.
What is Franklin known for?
We’re known for quite a number of things: Civil War history, fantastic schools, being an exceptionally attractive option for corporate relocations…the list goes on! But perhaps my favorite thing about Franklin is that we are known for having “America’s Favorite Main Street” I absolutely love leaving my office (a beautifully restored 100-year-old post office building) and walking past all the main street shops and the historic Franklin Theatre to a lunch appointment at one of our unbeatable local restaurants. It honestly feels like I’m living in the real-life version of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood!
What do you like best about life there?
See second part of answer above 😊.
If we got in your car and turned on some music, what are some songs that would appear on your playlist, CD or favorite radio station?
I have a very eclectic taste in music. I’ll listen to anything from Mozart to Skillet and Beatles to Broadway show tunes. …often all in the same day!
Have you ever had a mentor who made a difference in your life. How so?
I have a literal list that I’ve made of people that have had a profound influence on my life. Some of them I still see pretty regularly, others have long since passed away. But without any one of them, I would likely be a very different person than I am today. I keep the list to 1) remind me of who I am and who I am becoming, and 2) remind me to be thankful for all the people that had a hand in making me that person.
Describe your perfect vacation.
My wife and I both studied abroad in Heidelberg, Germany 25 years ago, but haven’t been able to make it back to Europe since. We both dream of being able to return – but this time, being able to experience it with our three daughters.
Do you prefer indoor sports or outdoor sports and why?
Outdoor. Indoor sports just can’t match the fresh air, feeling of the sun on your face, or the smell of the grass (or water, or trees, etc.) that outdoor sports can provide.
